Unlock the Potential of Flava-malt® in Your Brewing Process

Brewers continually seek unique flavors and distinct character in their beers, often experimenting with various ingredients. Recently, fruit flavors have gained popularity, and brand extensions are an effective way to expand a product’s reach. One innovative ingredient to consider is Flava-malt®.

What is Flava-malt®?

Flava-malt® is a malted wheat powder designed as a flavor delivery vehicle. This dried, shelf-stable powder allows you to add fruit and other flavors post-fermentation, similar to dry-hopping. By using FFlava-malt®, you gain a cost-effective alternative to fruit purees and extracts. It offers precise dosing, enhanced consistency, reduced waste, and simpler cleaning for brewers like you.

Why Use Flava-malt®?

  1. Ease of Use: Flava-malt® is simple to dose and integrate into the brewing process, with easy cleanup.
  2. Versatility: Use Flava-malt® across a wide range of beer styles- wheat beers, sours, IPAs and stouts- providing flexibility in recipe development.
  3. Balance and Depth: By integrating Flava-malt®, brewers can achieve a balanced flavor profile and lasting aroma.

How to Incorporate Flava-malt® into Your Brew

  1. Determine the Right Amount: Flava-malt® is typically used in small amounts, often ranging from 1/10 to 1/8 pound of dry product per barrel. The exact amount will depend on the desired flavor impact and the style of beer you’re brewing. We are happy to work with you in suggesting flavor amounts to try. Flava-malt® will NOT add any color to your beer, or any additional mouthfeel. If you are looking for either of those attributes from your flavor source, you may want to add about 25% of the puree or concentrate, and start with a minimum amount of Flava-malt® and add more if you desire more of a flavor impact.
  2. Add the Flava-malt®: For optimal results, add Flava-malt® post-fermentation, following your dry-hopping regimen. Cooling the wort before adding the product is recommended.
  3. Maintain cleanliness and avoid adding oxygen: While Flava-malt® is treated to reduce microbial load, use good aseptic technique to maintain sterile conditions as much as possible. Use best practices to reduce oxygen exposure in the fermentation or bright tank.
  4. Allow product to settle: Let Flava-malt® settle in the tank for at least 24 hours and up to seven days. This allows the malt to solubilize, leaving the flavor to permeate the tank. If storing in the tank for an extended period, purge any remaining solids as you would with dry hops.
  5. Monitor and taste: FFlava-malt® significantly impacts flavor, it is recommended to taste your brew after 24 hours and adjust the recipe as needed. Regular sampling will help you fine-tune the balance of ingredients.
  6. Consider Compatibility: Flava-malt® pairs well with various hops and yeasts. Be mindful of how its flavors interact with other components. For example, it can complement fruity hop notes or balance out the roastiness of dark malts.
  7. Proceed with packaging: Once flavor meets your sensory requirements, move on to packaging, using filtration, centrifuge or allowing any residue to settle naturally.

Tips for Success

  • Start Small: If you’re new to using Flava-malt®, start with a small batch to gauge its impact on flavor. This will help you get a feel for how it affects your beer without risking a large batch.
  • Experiment and Record: Keep detailed notes on your experiments with Flava-malt®. Document the amounts used, brewing conditions, and the final flavor outcomes to refine your process and recipes over time.

Conclusion

Flava-malt® presents an exciting opportunity for brewers to explore new flavor dimensions and elevate their beer creations. By incorporating this innovative product into your brewing process, you can craft beers with distinctive character and complexity. Experiment, taste, and adjust to unlock the full potential of Flava-malt® in your brews.

Using this product has made a difference in the life of one of our early Flava-malt® adopters, Kayleigh Paladino, at the Asher Brewing Company in Boulder Colorado. “We pride ourselves on using only the highest quality ingredients in our Ales, but as a small brewery, we’ve encountered cost and minimum order quantity constraints. When I heard about this product, I was stoked! The idea of a raspberry ale that would be affordable for both me and my consumers sounded too good to be true, but my guy Jeremiah has never led me astray. Not only was the product easy to use, but the results were wild. Our Raspberry Wheat Ale is tickling taste buds in the taproom at an astounding rate. The general feedback is that “most raspberry beers have a hint of fruit flavor, but this tastes like fresh-picked raspberries.” We can’t wait to try the other flavor options!”

Happy brewing!
